Florida Midterms Primary 2026: Who I’m Voting For and Everyone I Would Vote for as an Environmentalist Who Cares About People + Planet
I’m just an environmental communicator and writer who spends all her free time trying to help the planet and the people who inhabit it.
Yet, I would be remiss if I didn’t also take the time to urge you to vote - for whomever you choose.
Policies and politicians shape our government, and therefore, our lives.
The government creates policies on water and land management (or not), on public health, how to spend our taxes, our roads, our infrastructure, I could go on and on.
Everything is political.
The environment is incredibly politicized, especially in the State of Florida.
That is why I feel it is my duty to at least tell you who I’m voting for and why so you can make your own decisions.
August 18th is the final day to cast your vote for the primary in Florida.
Although Florida is a closed primary state, you can still vote for school board positions and other local municipal positions and ballots if you are registered as an independent. (Thank you, Allegra, for that information!)
November 3rd is election day, make sure you have both those dates in your calendar.
Now, let’s get into the candidates I’m voting for and why.
Rep. Angie Nixon for Florida Senator
My vote for Florida senator (congress) is Representative Angela Nixon.
She is a lifelong Floridian and a current state representative.
She is also a Black woman, mother of 5, and a former labor organizer with the SEIU public service union.
Angie was first elected in 2020, defeating Jacksonville political establishment candidate Kimberly Daniels. She has won all of her elections in a landslide, including her last election with 99.7% support.
Primarily, I’m voting for Angie because of her campaign message and the actions her campaign has taken to live by those values.
For instance, her position is to create a government that works for The People and not corporations.
So far, she has been able to raise over 1 million dollars of campaign funding through 100% grassroots efforts, no corporate PACs or any PACs, all small donations from everyday people.
Angie is running on Medicare for all, universal childcare, universal jobs programs, paid sick leave, ending US wars and US support for Israel, and taxing the rich.
I’m personally voting for her based on the aforementioned positions, and her stance on climate change and the climate crisis we're in.

Oliver Larkin, FL-25
My choice for House of Representatives CD-25 is Oliver Larkin.
This is purely because he is from the district he is running to represent, his policies would actually help South Florida residents and Americans at large, and he has a strong stance on protecting Florida’s environment.
I stumbled upon Oliver Larkin first last year (2025) when I got served a video of Oliver talking about the Tri-Rail and how the state’s current administration was looking to defund this vital railway.
For those of you who don’t know, the Tri-Rail is a local commuter train that connects West Palm Beach to Miami Airport. This is an important public transportation system, and Oliver was speaking in favor of saving it.
To some, it might be a small issue, but for me, it made all the difference.
It wasn’t until 2026 that I realized that Oliver was a serious contender and could dethrone incumbent Jared Moskowitz.
When it comes to the environment and building climate resiliency, he is strong, from his website:
Climate Resiliency for South Florida
Florida’s 25th District is one of the most vulnerable areas in the country to climate change. From failing pipes and boil water notices to blooms of toxic cyanobacteria (previously known as "blue-green algae") and die-offs of endangered species, our infrastructure and ecosystems are in crisis.
Our environment is our economy. Oliver supports federal public investment in sustainable energy and infrastructure to create millions of good-paying jobs, preserve our South Florida community for future generations, and make the U.S. a global leader in sustainable innovation. In Congress, he’ll fight to bring federal resources home to upgrade public infrastructure, restore natural ecosystems, clean our water, and hold polluters accountable.
For this issue, he then goes on to address some key focus areas such as public transportation (woohoo!), public utilities (so important!), public lands, and creating a plan for a just energy transition away from fossil fuels to renewables.
He is big on Everglades restoration, protecting Florida’s natural resources, and our access to those resources.
I was happy to find out he is a certified PADI open water diver and aware of how important, as well as threatened, Florida’s Coral Reef is.
Oliver Larkin has my vote for House of Representatives District 25.

Dayna Marie Foster, Florida Governor
Florida needs someone who is going to do good by Floridians.
That governor would be Dayna Marie Foster.
Who better to run the state than someone who has a firsthand look as a government worker and public servant herself, a teacher from Broward County?
Dayna knows what it means to do vital work in the community and yet struggle to make ends meet, that’s why her policies are meeting Floridians where we are.
She's focused on:
Creating economic opportunity for working Floridians
Affordable housing
Expanding access to healthcare by expanding Medicare
Supporting the immigrant community
Gun reform
Protecting and funding public schools
These are the policies that would move the needle for the average Floridian regardless of whether they’re a retiree, blue-collar worker, white-collar worker, family, child, and beyond!
We need a state that properly allocates its funding into programs that matter and support the people directly.
Only then can we have a prosperous community that is clean and safe, things we all want.

Joey Mendoza Atkins for Florida Agriculture Commission
This is a critical position I don’t always hear a lot about.
By definition, the commissioner of agriculture is a constitutional officer in the executive branch of government of the U.S. state of Florida that heads the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). Elected for a four-year term that is limited to two consecutive terms of office.
The person in charge will manage our farming practices, food, and consumer services.
If you didn’t know, the Florida government has been in bed with Big Sugar for three decades now (note who was in power).
Eroding Florida’s ecosystems and natural spaces, polluting our waters with excessive synthetic fertilizers.
That excessive fertilizer use runs off into Lake Okeechobee and then into the man-made river we cut across the state in the 1950s, sending all that synthetic fertilizer runoff to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean.
This has destroyed our ecosystem, tourism, and decimated fish and bird populations.
We need someone who will fight for farmers, fight for Floridians, and protect our natural resources.
My choice is Joey Mendoza Atkins.

Jose Javier Rodriguez for Florida Attorney General
This is another government leadership role that doesn’t get enough attention: Attorney General.
It’s incredibly important that we establish someone who is committed to protecting the People of Florida as well as the environment, because the Attorney General can propose legislation, represent the public’s interest, and enforce federal and state environmental laws, amongst other things.
I’m voting for Jose Javier Rodriguez for Florida Attorney General.

Annette Taddeo for Florida Chief Financial Officer
Another critical role, Chief Financial Officer (Florida), Annette Taddeo.
From Ballotpedia: The chief financial officer (CFO) oversees the Florida Department of Financial Services, a conglomeration of state agencies including the Departments of Insurance, Treasury, State Fire Marshal, and Banking & Finance. The Department of Financial Services was created by a constitutional referendum in 1998 and officially opened on January 1, 2003.
Annette is running on a “families first” platform because she believes corporations have taken advantage of the everyday Floridian.
She’s explicitly going after (home) insurance companies, which even though I don’t own a home myself, I totally agree with.
I want to see someone hold these insurance companies accountable.
From Annette’s Website: In 2017, Annette Taddeo made history as the first Latina Democrat elected to the Florida State Senate — winning a special election that flipped a Trump district from red to blue.
(Continued) Now she’s running for Chief Financial Officer — because Florida’s families are being robbed in plain sight. Insurance companies are raking in profits while homeowners can’t afford to stay in their homes. Tallahassee insiders are protecting themselves and their donors instead of the people who elected them.
